Bureau Blank

Work

Something to GAIN.

We provide design, communication and technology for a special community of clients:

  • government
  • academia
  • infrastructure
  • non-profit

Our clients are builders, thinkers, investors and policymakers.

Their collective work shapes our everyday experience. And that's why we focus our creativity where innovation can have the biggest impact.

G – Government
Government is a key partner in nearly every social system, especially in cities. From establishing and enforcing policy to providing services, each of our focus sectors is in constant collaboration with all levels of government.

A – Academia
In addition to being the vehicle for education, universities represent the foremost thinkers, researchers, and experts in their fields.

I – Infrastructure
Infrastructure – whether public, private, or a hybrid of both – delivers many of the services that we rely on every day. Energy and transportation are two of the critical systems in which we have experience.

N – Non-Profit
Non-profit organizations and their philanthropic backers are a catalyzing force for change. They are also forums for innovation and experimentation with new ways to improve quality of life for our country and communities.

NYC Department of Consumer Affairs

winning together

Campaigns to reach New Yorkers far and wide

Our Client

The NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is the city’s agency for consumer protection and labor rights. Their work affects New Yorkers every day as they eat, shop and work. It guides employees and all city residents on business laws, labor rights, consumer protection, and financial empowerment. It assists businesses in navigating the regulatory landscape to be successful - a “win-win” strategy that means what’s good for customers is good for businesses.

Challenge

Because it addresses so many audiences with unique priorities, DCA often uses public outreach and information campaigns to promote specific initiatives. Campaigns must effectively empower diverse audiences to improve their working lives and everyday experiences.

Results

We collaborated with the DCA team to create materials to advise business owners about their rights and responsibilities and encourage New Yorkers who earn under $60,000 to use the City’s free tax prep services. Most notably, we helped announce the expanded Paid Sick Leave law with "Feel 100%, Work 100%" ads placed all around the city.

The Paid Sick Leave campaign touched all 5 boroughs with ads and events that drove hundreds of thousands of inquiries to 311 and the agency website in the law’s first year. Approximately 145,000 New Yorkers used the tax prep services in 2015, a 50% increase over the previous year.

Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund

empowering families

The platform to take a good idea nationwide

The Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund's mission is to help families and individuals out of poverty by integrating financial empowerment strategies into local government social services. In addition to developing a visual identity and redesigning the organization's website, Bureau Blank provided art direction, messaging, and marketing templates to launch the Fund's first national initiative. The CFE Fund will replicate New York City's model of free city-sponsored financial counseling (piloted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg) in Philadelphia, Lansing, Denver, San Antonio, Nashville, and more cities in the coming years.

ContourGlobal

power and progress

An innovative global citizen powering communities in need

Our Client

Founded in 2005 by Joseph Brandt and Reservoir Capital, ContourGlobal is an innovative energy company whose operations around the world are concentrated on developing markets. Their approach develops the most beneficial energy solution in each area to provide affordable, reliable electricity for people who need it most. What sets ContourGlobal apart are its commitments to health, safety, and responsible, ethical management. Innovation, execution, and citizenship are ContourGlobal’s hallmarks, and its communications reflect those values.

Challenge

How do we help build ContourGlobal’s brand recognition amidst its rapid growth? How can we tell a story that reflects their successes and commitments, as it supports their mission of bringing energy to those who need it most? How can communications assets drive further valuation and new business opportunities for the company?

Results

Bureau Blank created ContourGlobal’s overall communications strategy and helps to build their communications capacity. We developed ContourGlobal’s website, designed and drafted content for their annual sustainability reports, produced informative videos, organized and art directed on-site photo and media shoots, and created infographics and internal training resources for the company. Our work continues to build the team’s communications capacity to share ContourGlobal’s story more widely.

ChangeLab Solutions

built to evolve

A platform that tracks, quantifies, and discovers answers in a challenging field

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the largest philanthropic institution focusing exclusively on health, partnered with ChangeLab Solutions (CLS) to conduct a review of technical assistance (TA) response and tracking systems that are in use across the nationwide Childhood Obesity initiative.

We partnered with CLS to imagine how technology could connect efforts with results taking place across the nation, creating a place for audiences to ask questions and get answers. We arrived at a focused, easy-to-use platform that is a hybrid digital experience: both a web app and a TA tracking system. Our strategy was heavily influenced by the Stanford Social Innovation Review's Collective Impact ideology. The new TA platform closes the knowledge gap in this field by combining a solution that is both outcome-focused and collaborative for users.

For the first time, policymakers can understand how the initiative is impacting the nation and their local neighborhoods, how organizations are uniquely contributing, and discover evidence-based strategies for problems they are solving in the field. This TA platform will be a first-of-its-kind solution for empowering the childhood obesity prevention field — providing a framework for uniting and inspiring policymakers for nationwide initiatives to adapt and evolve.

New York University

real results

The growth story behind the data

Our Client

New York University has grown immensely in prestige, geographic size, academic scope and enrollment since 2002. NYU is not only a top-rated major research university, but also among the largest in the United States, with an enrollment of over 22,610 students among its 18 schools and colleges.

Challenge

With such a large scale, how can NYU tell a story of complex data in compelling, user-friendly language?

Results

To tell the story of growth and achievement in a clear, concise way online, Bureau Blank collaborated with the university's communications team to create NYU By The Numbers. We delivered content strategy, design, and development to organize large amounts of data into a compelling narrative with simple user experience. To expand the “By The Numbers” story, we built Millennium In Motion to incorporate more interactive features and high quality video, allowing the voices of NYU community members to add a personal touch to the narrative.
